The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok is facilitating the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ministry of Defence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on Defence Cooperation.
The draft MoU, prepared by the Ministry of Defence of Sri Lanka, has been officially submitted to the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of Thailand and is currently under consideration by the Thai authorities.
The proposed MoU seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for bilateral defence cooperation in the following areas:
- Security and defence policy
- Exchange of information and intelligence
- Counter-terrorism cooperation
- Exchange visits of military personnel
- Military education and training
- Joint and combined military exercises
- Cyber security
- Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR)
- Peacekeeping operations
- Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) defence
- Military medical services, including research and development
- Military industries and defence technology cooperation
- Military sports
- Any other defence-related areas of mutual interest as may be mutually decided by both parties in the future
Upon its conclusion, the MoU will serve as an important institutional framework for strengthening defence relations, enhancing military-to-military cooperation, and promoting long-term strategic collaboration between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
