Economic Relation between Sri Lanka and Laos
Sri Lanka and the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) enjoy cordial bilateral relations, although economic and commercial engagement remains limited. Bilateral trade has historically been modest and irregular, reflecting the relatively small size of both markets, geographical distance, and limited business connectivity. Nevertheless, both countries are members of the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA), providing a framework for future trade cooperation.
Laos has recorded steady economic growth over the past three decades through market-oriented reforms, increased foreign direct investment, and the development of its natural resource sector. As an ASEAN member state situated in the Mekong region, Laos offers opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters seeking access to emerging markets in Southeast Asia.
Economic and trade relations between Sri Lanka and Laos remain modest but possess considerable untapped potential. Bilateral trade continues to be characterized by low volumes, limited product diversification, and a persistent trade deficit for Sri Lanka.
The existence of APTA provides an institutional framework for expanding commercial relations, although utilization remains negligible. Increased trade promotion activities, business networking, greater awareness of market opportunities, and enhanced private sector engagement could contribute to broadening bilateral trade.
Looking ahead, cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and regional value chains offers opportunities to strengthen economic relations between Sri Lanka and Laos and to deepen engagement within the wider Asia-Pacific region.
